hi people,

I have a old laptop at my home. Its a IBM thinkpad. The harddisk has failed. I came to know that there is a way to install os and run everything from the external sources like pendrives of external harddisk. Can anybody tell me about any such possibility.

Welcome jak the bottle

Acconrding to the Microsoft News Group

Windows cannot boot from an USB drive. If your computer supports
booting from such device, you can load a boot loader to the USB device
which starts Windows XP from the HDD.

But if you still want to do this, first of check whether your PC supports boot from USB/Flash drives bcz this is the primary requirement to do that..If it supports then please go through this article this may help you

Hi,

As Ganesh said the requirement is that PC should be able to boot via USB, you check this from the BIOS by changing the device you boot from. Also here is a tut on how to set up your pen drive to install XP from it :)
