Always use the same safe location for grooming. Halter him and cross tie him at this grooming station each time he is groomed.

  • Start with a curry brush, an oval-shaped rubber grooming tool with grooves. Use small circular motions, applying steady, comforting pressure, starting at the top of the neck and working down and across his body, under his belly and shanks, briskly working in tight circles. Do not use the curry on his legs since there is minimal soft tissue and the curry’s pressure is hurtful on his bones and joints. Complete one side of his body and then curry the other side.
  • (If you prefer, curry and brush at the same time, using alternate strokes. This is a great time saving and effective method of grooming. To use curry and brush simultaneously, hold curry in one hand and a medium-bristle brush in the other, stroke first with the curry and follow over that stroke with the brush. Repeat curry and bristle-brush strokes over the entire horse; complete one side, then move to the other side.)
  • Briskly stroke over the entire horse with a medium-bristled brush, starting at the neck. Complete brushing both sides of the horse. This effectively removes the loose dirt and hair that the curry brush lifts up from the hide.
  • Put your attention to his head and face. Always use a small ultra-soft brush. Ease it over his face, avoiding the eyes. Draw his head closer to you, and coo, fuss and talk nonsense to him as you do this – your horse will simply adore you! Use a cloth to wipe around eyes, nostrils and mouth.
  • Before you finish the head, check for eye matter or drainage and wipe. Handle and stroke his ears for 30 seconds, checking that there are no foreign objects or biting insects. If done routinely, you will promote his trust and, more importantly, prevent head shying.
  • Brush his forelock and mane using a medium-bristle brush. If you are preserving every strand of hair in forelock and mane, then never brush. Use a wide tooth comb instead, being extremely careful NOT to pull or tear at the hair.
  • Concentrate on his tail. If you are not concerned about tail length or some hair breakage, go ahead and brush the tail, using a medium-bristle brush. But if every hair is important, read The Old Gray Mare’s follow up article on tail care.
  • Now is the best time to look closer at any cuts or bumps that you noticed during the curry and brushing session. Treat any cuts appropriately and apply salve as necessary.
  • Divert your attention to his legs and hooves. Run your hands down your horse’s legs to feel for swelling, bumps and knots.
  • Pick up each hoof in succession to pick out the soiled matter, noticing any cracks, abscesses or loose horse shoe nails. Cracks need to be taken care of quickly to prevent expansion and infection. Obviously, abscesses require immediate attention, possibly by your veterinarian.
  • If you notice a foul or excessive odor in any hoof, apply a thrush medicine liberally, especially on the frog.
  • Use a stiff-bristle hoof brush to briskly scrub the coronet band and outer hoof wall to promote blood flow. Twice a week, apply a hoof conditioner at the coronet band and top inch of the hoof. Once a week, treat the entire hoof with conditioner.

And 10. Almost done! – You’re now ready to use the finishing brush to give a final brushing over the horse’s coat and to give him the final “spit shine.” This will get off any remaining dust and lay the hairs down smoothly. Always use the brush in the hair growth direction. Apply coat shine spray, misting lightly starting at the top of the neck. Avoid overspray near eyes and ears. The final touch – take a plush towel and rub smoothly along hair growth.

Dallas Museum of Art: Trying to Build My Art Evaluation & Appreciation Skills

I recently spent a Sunday afternoon at the Dallas Museum of Art, which is located on Harwood street in downtown Dallas. I had been to the Museum before, but my previous visits were quick walks through the building while I absorbed as much information about painters, Painting Kits, and popular painting styles as I could in a short amount of time. On this trip I decided to concentrate on one section of the museum and just a few artists; I would save other sections and subjects for another day. In order to exercise my art evaluation skills, I decided to focus on paintings of one subject and just a few artists. The paintings would be appealing to me at first glance and they would be paintings that I had not seen or studied in the past.

After having walked around for a short time, I came across what has become my favorite oil painting. Mountain Landscape with an Approaching Storm by Claude-Joseph Vernet was painted in 1774 for Lord Shelburne, an English collector, at the height of Vernet’s career. This large, detailed painting is of a lightning storm that is bearing down on a village and the people at work on a nearby river. The painter uses slanted lines to show the force of the wind against the trees and people, and his color selections in the clouds and foreground make the viewer feel as if he is part of the painting. I think the detail of this painting is amazing; a viewer can see the hurried expressions on the faces of the people as the women gather their children to start home and as the men pull in their fishing nets. He has also added some humor by showing a stubborn donkey that refuses to budge. This painting shows how helpless man can be against nature, and in my eyes is one of the best paintings of that time.

The next painting that I viewed was Claude Monet’s The Seine at Lavacourt, which is a simple landscape painting that was produced for submission to the Official Salon in 1880. The painting is of the Seine river as it runs past the Lavacourt as Monet viewed it from his own property, and it is typical of his style; textured brushstrokes and light colors. The town’s reflection is shown in the water, and a large bush in the foreground is a highlight of the painting. The picture has little detail, and the people and boats are but a single brush stroke. The light shades of blue give the work a tranquil feeling, and the painting has a soothing effect on the viewer. It is interesting that this painting was produced in his studio from previous versions of the same subject and not outdoors.

After spending some time viewing these two artworks, I tried to understand and compare in my mind why I liked one painting over the other. Both of these oil paintings appealed to my eye; both were created by skilled artists, and both were a depiction of the natural world that surrounds us. One artist chose to create an exact duplicate of what he saw and felt, while the other artist created an ideal of what he felt the viewer should see. If I had to select one painting over the other, my lean would be toward Approaching Storm because this painting makes me feel as if I were a part of the moment and I believe that is what a painting should do. I really enjoyed my visit to the Dallas Museum of Art and look forward to my next trip. Before leaving I noticed a beautiful painting named The Icebergs, by Frederic Church that definitely deserves some more of my time.

Our depression-minded family owns quite a bit of stuff. Most of that stuff aren’t things we’ve actually purchased ourselves but were saved by parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on. We have so much stuff that despite having a four-story house and a two-story barn, we still don’t have quite enough room to store it all.

One of the advantages of having so much stuff is that we pretty much own anything anyone would ever need. Want to borrow a scythe? Yep, we got one. An outboard motor? Uh-Huh. A set of wooden skis? Model T wheels? Hand plow? A corrugated steel bathtub? Check, check, check, and double-check.

Keeping track of the stuff you loan out to friends and family is a challenge. While a person might remember the book or DVD loaned to Mom, if you are in the habit of loaning out a lot of things, it’s best to have some sort of system for keeping track of who has what. At our house, we have different systems for the different things we need to keep track of.

Chalkboard system

For garden supplies, automotive tools, or outdoor types of things, we use the chalkboard system. We drilled a chalkboard into the back of a door, and keep a running list ~ in chalk ~ of what is checked out to whom and on what day. This list helps us retrieve our property when we need to use it, and prompts us to remind neighbors like Bill that “We haven’t forgotten that you still have our 12-foot ladder.”

The clipboard system

For keeping track of my dishes, the roasting pan, the hand crank meat grinder, the 30 cup coffee maker and all my kitchen stuff that is used for canning or entertaining, I use a 9 x 12 clipboard and a 70-page spiral binder. The clipboard is hung from a hook in my pantry where it’s out of sight, yet still easy to find. When my friends come over to borrow something, I hand them the clipboard and have them write down what’s been borrowed.

The library checkout system

We have a fairly large library with a pretty decent collection of art books, “How-tos,” reference books and so forth. Whenever someone borrows a book, I slap an address label on the cover and record the name of the book on a 3 x 5 card along with the borrower’s name and date. The card is stored in the one book that never leaves our library, our Webster’s Dictionary.

Video or CD rental

We have a lot of videos, CDs, and DVDs… possibly even more than Hastings. For keeping track of who’s borrowed what, I use another clipboard and a second 70-page spiral notebook. When the movies get borrowed, we slap an address label on the outside of the jewel case or box, then write the name of the movie and the borrower in the binder, and store it safely in the TV cabinet.

There’s all sorts of ways to keep track of who’s borrowed your stuff. But whether you jot it down on a clipboard, or write it on a chalk or white erase board, the important thing is to develop some kind of system and stick with it. Without keeping track of who has got your stuff, eventually, your belongings may disappear for good.
