As you climb up the mountain the air starts getting thinner and it becomes more difficult to breathe. You’re hiking and you feel certain light-headedness and you think to yourself ‘this cannot be good’. This is actually an efficient method of training for athletes. A matter of seconds is a determining factor in a game so, the athletes have to train really hard for such a competitive environment.

What is altitude training?

High altitude in athlete training means an altitude above 7000 to 8000 well above sea level. When athletes train in higher altitudes they breathe in less oxygen per breath. The air is thin at the higher altitudes so the oxygen content is decreased too. When you breathe in oxygen then it acts like fuel to supply to your body muscles. It is an extremely difficult task to have extensive exercise at higher altitudes. So, the next question would be are all the people of the hilly areas slow and lethargic? No, they are obviously not. The people who live in high altitudes have an increased hemoglobin count that helps then to deliver more oxygen even if the air is thin.

This is how the body acclimatizes. High altitude training is to acclimatize an athlete’s body to low oxygen content. This is done to increase the amount of oxygen that their body can deliver to the muscles. If they increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of their body by training at high altitudes then when they at sea level or at low altitudes, where the oxygen content is normal, they can deliver more oxygen to their muscles which will slow down the process of muscle fatigue in them. This will give a good advantage over other athletes who are still delivering the same amount of oxygen to heir’s muscles.
